Ultra-Conservative Ex- Congressman José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile's New Leader.

Following a conclusive runoff election, hardline candidate José Antonio Kast has clinched the top job in Chile.

A Clear-Cut Win

After more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast garnered 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This represents Kast's third bid for the presidency, having earlier been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.

Campaign Focused On Security and Immigration

Known for his unwavering socially conservative views and admiration for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely centered on promises to address increasing insecurity and drastically curb migration.

He frequently cited immigrants, especially the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the campaign, he gave an final demand for them to leave before the March 11 handover or face removal.

His proposals included U.S.-style measures such as erecting holding facilities, border walls, electric fences, and increasing the armed forces presence on the northernmost border.

Within a Regional Wave

Several observers view Kast's win as part of a broader conservative trend in the region, similar to this year's political wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

However, other pundits also describe it as a continuation of the regular alternation of power between left and right-wing administrations since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.

Ruling Lacking a Strong Majority

Despite his clear electoral triumph, Kast does not hold an clear majority in Congress, neither in the lower house or the Senate, even when all conservative parties are counted together.

This political landscape might complicate his plans, including a pledge to slash public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a measure for which he has yet to detailed specifics.

"There are numerous things about what a Kast government will look like that we don't know because he has not explained his methods for do them," noted a political science professor.

The analyst stated, "In terms of economic policy, it is almost certain we will see austerity policies typical of the right. But where there is much less doubt is on public safety, because that has been his central theme throughout the campaign."
