Tuchel Seeks Jude Bellingham's Fire Provided England's Star Leaves His Ego at the Door.

A single omission was enough. Another and it would have started to look vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to understand that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require contributions by Jude Bellingham, even if it is also on the midfielder to adapt to the game plans and player rankings necessary with England now that he is back in Tuchel's warm embrace.

Tuchel wants Bellingham's edge, his fire, but it is a matter of channeling it in the right way. Personal talent matters but England know from bitter experience that there is a cost when fame dominates. Nevertheless, a statement has been delivered.

The midfielder was given food for thought after not being selected of the recent team selection. He observed England qualify at the tournament without him. He saw the young talent excel as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel talk about loving the group’s energy and principles. Naturally, he has responded in champion style, netting important strikes for his club versus Barcelona and Juventus. He had to be picked; another omission would have put his tournament chances precarious.

The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder focused on pressuring the opposition instead of teammates. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is little benefit to starting a conflict with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period not playing has demonstrated that representing the national team is a valuable, uncertain thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now throw a protective shield for the 22-year-old after showing that he is not afraid to make big calls.

“There is no problem regarding him, and no concern with the character,” the German stated. “Jude possesses the edge. You need that kind of fire to reach the heights that he has. We all need to help him and create a setting where he can channel that intensity towards opponents and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”

Bellingham took up much of the focus at the team news conference for the upcoming final group games versus Serbia and the other. Who else? Well, what about Phil Foden? Here is another prodigious No 10 in need of love and guidance. Foden has not played for England since March and has struggled to reach his best recently but the boss could not ignore the player after how he played in his club's victory against the German side this week.

The issue, though, is how to use the attacking talents at available. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze have earned their places and there will be a good argument to include Cole Palmer once he overcomes a persistent groin problem. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the tournament be excessive? The previous manager failed to discover the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the team, restricting the captain's style as a result.

It is hard to see Tuchel doing similar if it harms the attacking balance. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clarity helps. He is selected as a central attacker. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a central midfielder and the returning Adam Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for Foden, who has to be central. Tuchel prefers him close to the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but no spot exists on your best position, can you play left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he stated. “Phil will play in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I have this idea about him for years. In my view it matches his abilities best.”

Tuchel agreed there are times when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And a player like him who has obvious passion for the game, then obviously an issue exists, be it the position, the setup, I don’t know.

“In my opinion he is additionally so used to playing for Man City in a certain structure, with a defined role. Believe he profits a lot from clarity. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?

The manager mentioned Bellingham making runs for tap-ins and the other drilling in goals from outside the box. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Several players, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his good displays for City at left-back. Interest abounds.

Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Fascinatingly, he hinted at using Foden as a false 9 versus one opponent or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are alternatives if Kane be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for testing tactics.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to develop Kane’s relationship with his teammate going. It's surprising that you have to go back to the latter assisting the captain to net in an international match versus the Scots in September 2023 to find the one and only time in 35 games for England when the duo combined for a goal. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with one opponent and Slovenia at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.

“At this point eventually it falls to the duty of the individuals,” he stated. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. There is still a sense of Bellingham having to prove himself. He cannot even be guaranteed to start versus the upcoming opponents. Tuchel wants Bellingham committed but he will be observing him carefully. Leave the ego outside. It will make a very strong England team into an more effective one.
