Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is departing from the board at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
The economist remarked in a statement that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have participated, excited about the potential of the company, and anticipate tracking their advancement".
The prominent academic, who previously headed the prestigious university, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
Message Exchange
The freshly disclosed messages demonstrated that the official communicated with the financier until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 arrest for accused sex trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the technology organization said it understood Summers' choice to resign.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he provided to the Board," the company remarked.
Political Context
This development comes after the two houses of the US legislature decided on recently to pass a legislation that would compel the US justice department to disclose its records on the case.
The measure will subsequently head to the administration of the White House for approval. The President has said he expects to sign the legislation, after modifying his position on the matter following pushback from his supporters.

A batch of Epstein-connected correspondence disclosed by the House Oversight Committee last week mentioned multiple prominent individuals in the Epstein's former circle, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.
The communications showed that the economist and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often trying to connect the academic to notable world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were released with the wider community, he stated he took "complete accountability for my misguided choice to maintain corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he desired "to rebuild faith and repair relationships with the persons nearest to me".
Previous Positions
The economist occupied senior posts under Democratic administrations; functioning as economic leader under the former president, and as director of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He presided over Harvard from five years and is still a academic there. When declaring his departure from public commitments previously on this week, he indicated he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following the economist's statement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a progressive research organization in DC where Summers was a senior fellow, verified that he was not affiliated with the group.
He joined the directorate of the AI company, which creates the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a defeated move to remove its chief executive the company leader.
