Fireworks and a Toast to Life: Israeli Citizens Delight over Agreement to Return Captives
The announcement regarding a deal expected to lead to the freeing captives held within Gaza for more than two years has caused joy and comfort across Israel.
A group which has campaigned for the release of Israeli captives in Gaza expressed “profound gratitude” for what it termed a “landmark achievement”.
The deal—still requiring agreed upon Israel’s war cabinet—will see the release of 20 living hostages as well as the remains of 28 dead hostages in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners imprisoned for life in Israeli jails plus 1,700 individuals from the Gaza region.
So far, 148 hostages have been returned—largely through earlier truce agreements—51 bodies have been retrieved while eight hostages have been rescued.
Jubilant Scenes in Hostages’ Square
Joyous gatherings took place in Hostages’ Square located in Tel Aviv as hundreds of people gathered before the deal being signed.
The gathering started applauding and dancing under American and Israeli banners—a female attendee holding up a sign saying: “We adore Trump.”
“It’s a magical day,” she expressed.
A different person, Yael, aged 50, cried as she watched the crowd dancing.
“I am thrilled—it’s such a relief,” she stated. “We must witness their return home to their families.”

Families Celebrate with Fireworks
The mother and sister of a captive Israeli Matan Zangauker lit fireworks to mark the news of his impending returned home.
“They are returning!... Matan is on his way home!” Einav Zangauker exclaimed as she held her child.
Viki Cohen, the parent of captive Israeli Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My son, you are returning home.”
The joy could be felt throughout the avenues in Tel Aviv following the announcement.
Freed Hostages Offer Prayers and Toasts
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari rejoiced alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then toasting “L’chaim”, which means “to life”. She has advocated for the freedom of her companions, the Berman twins Gali and Ziv.
Their brother Liran Berman wrote: “My dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You are coming back.”
Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was taken hostage on 7 October 2023, and her body recovered from a tunnel in Gaza nearly a year after. He has been joining other captives’ relatives in pushing for an agreement which ensures the homecoming of everyone still detained in Gaza.
“I hardly believe this is real. We have waited for so long and here it is,” he expressed.
He stated he felt “broken” that Carmel would not be among those returning home but was “radiant with happiness” for the relatives of the hostages who are at last coming back.
Eitan Horn was seized from Nir Oz kibbutz in Israel’s south together with his sibling.
Cautious Optimism from Family Members
Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, said she felt as if she were in “a dream state”.
“We’re more than grateful to President Trump and all he has accomplished on our behalf. It seems like it might be the start of the conclusion of this nightmare, and hugging Eitan seems nearer than ever,” she commented.
However, she warned that it was still too soon to rejoice.
“Before the final captive returns, we’re not opening the bubbly. We’re going to keep fighting... until the end,” she affirmed.
“Numerous events might occur until the last moment which is why we are extremely cautious. We simply wish to express gratitude to all who was involved in the efforts and make sure this agreement is done... We shall rejoice only once we have the last hostage back home.”
Eitan was captured from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel along with his brother Iair, who was freed from captivity through a truce agreement earlier in the year.
