Canada Exonerated of American Allegations of Rigging Skeleton Qualifying Race

The Canadian skeleton team have been absolved of charges that they rigged a qualifying event for the Winter Olympics, thereby denying rival athletes a spot to qualify.

Central Claim and Official Inquiry

US skeleton veteran a five-time Olympian alleged the Canadian squad of withdrawing four of its six competitors from a race in Lake Placid. She claimed this reduced the field, making a lower points pool available. Although she took first place, the American athlete failed to earn her berth for the 2026 Olympics.

“Existing federation regulations permit National Federations to withdraw athletes from an event at any time,” stated the governing body.

Following an investigation, the federation announced it would take no action, rejecting the allegations as no rules were broken of its regulations.

Canada's Explanation

In response, Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton stood by the withdrawals, citing competitor health and the need for rest. The organization stated that the individuals pulled had competed extensively that week and the move was “correct, transparent and in keeping with both their well-being and the sport's fairness.”

Coaches from several affected nations had voiced “deep worry” about the qualification process.

The Athlete's Future

For Katie Uhlaender, the Milan-Cortina Games are planned to be her last Olympic appearance. Her path to qualification remains, the likely American berths are projected for Kelly Curtis and Mystique Ro. Uhlaender is a former world champion whose closest Olympic finish was fourth place in 2014.
