At least 64 Dead in Rio's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Organized Crime
At least 64 individuals died in a law enforcement action targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's history.
Four security agents lost their lives during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials said. More than 80 people were arrested.
Violent conflicts commenced when around 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday morning. The Red Command responded with gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, police representatives confirmed.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "appalled" by the police operation, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Mission Consequences
The informal settlements near the city's international airport is regarded as the main base of a major organised crime groups.
Local authorities confirmed at least 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Dozens of people were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.
