Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Battle Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff following a rollercoaster last day of competition.

Rai nailed a decisive birdie from just over eight foot to seal the victory, repeating his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a playoff victory against the same opponent.

Final Round Excitement

The champion entered the final round with a one-shot lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that included seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.

Fleetwood moved a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last hole.

Play-Off Climax

This led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” said the winner, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”

Other Contenders

The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to do, coming up one shot behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under final round of ten-under. It was his best-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.

Højgaard carded six birdies of his as well, but his chances of leading the standings were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell produced an excellent last round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australia’s Hillier.
