A Pig's Tale: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as pardoning holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life without fear.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, donated by a first responder, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people shouting “6-7” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to kick off the holiday season,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: joyful, diverse, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Annually, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and cafecito as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
